I just finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and it's now become one of my favorite books. The book ends by Bruno sneaking in the concentration camp where Shmuel was in, going on a march and, staying in a metal chamber. His parent were looking for him for months and then a year passed by and he still wasn't found. His father goes into the camp and that's how to book ended. This book is very important because although it talks about the Holocaust it focuses a lot on the relationship of Shmuel and Bruno. I think the main takeaway from this book is that friendship is stronger than anything else. The fence where Bruno and Shmuel always talked represented the divide that the Germans and the Jews had with one another. At the time Bruno didn't know why there was a fence and why the people in the striped pajamas looked so depressed. Since Bruno was so young he never really understood why there was a divide and all the soldiers in the concentration camps were always laughing. Later in the book he understood that the Germans hated the Jews and that's why there was a divide between the two. This book still matters today because it talks about a bond that can never be broken even if you have to die together which it didn't say that they died but we can infer that. As Bruno and Shmuel spent more and more time together in Auschwitz they become closer than Bruno ever was with anyone. In the book(page 213) when both boys were in the concentration camp Bruno says, " 'You're my best friend, Shmuel, ' he said. 'My best friend for life' " This really represents that main takeaway from this book because the relationship that they had were stronger than anything. This was what happened at the end of the book and why this book is still so valuable today.

The Holocaust was a terrible time for the Jews. So far, the book I'm reading, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas talks about Shmuel getting hurt after eating Bruno's food and how Bruno doesn't understand what's happening with the Jews and why they looked so depressed. The mass killings, labor, and other torture was what they had to deal with during the control of Hitler. After the genocide you'd think that many Jews that made it out alive were in relief and that they had a place of freedom. But, the aftermath of the Holocaust led to many Jews becoming homeless due to many antisemitism riots. The riots led to to thousands of Jews migrating and staying in refugee camps. In 1948 when the state of Israel was established many Jews who still didn't have homes, moved to Israel. Finally, after many years, Jews who were once forced into concentration camps now had a home in Israel. In this article it says that the Jews later attacked the Palestinians due to the fact that they shared land but the Jews wanted it for themselves. This conflict still occurs today as the Israel-Palestine conflict which is basically Israel and Palestine fighting over land. The still happens today because the Jews that never had a home after the Holocaust finally found Israel as a home that to this day, causes a lot of conflict.
The book, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne was about the event of the holocaust and concentration camps that were controlled by Hitler and the Nazi. This relates to the real-life historical events because it talks about the Jews that were in concentration camps but in this real-life event it doesn't mention a boy that moves from Berlin to Out-With(Auschwitz) that becomes good friends with a child in the concentration camps. (Making this book historical fiction) According to an article " A lot of Germans were definitely aware of mass killings of Jews (Slavs, mentally disabled etc.), but not what specifically happened in the concentration camps." This was the point of view of the people in Germany on this conflict. Bruno's family was not in the concentration camps but his father was named commandant by Hitler. Because of that Bruno's perspective on the camp was very different from his father's perspective. This book is connected to the Holocaust because it talks about the concentration camp and a specific person that was in the camp that Bruno became great friends with.
Bullying is when someone is physically, mentally, and or emotionally abusing someone. Bullying can be done in many ways. Ex- Physically hurting someone, making someone feel bad about themselves, name calling, sending mean messages, etc. according to stopbullying.gov, Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Approximately 160,000 students skip school every day because of bullying. Students reporting wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time. 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of repeated bullying. Some students are being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester. 1 in 4 teachers say nothing when bullying is seen or they ignore it. People should care about bullying because one day their child could be a victim of bullying. When a child is bullied it can cause depression, social problems, stress related health problems, low self esteem, school skipping, aggressive behaviors. Suicide is a HUGE “symptom” of bullying. Children who bully others could be getting bullied themselves. Or they could have been through a trauma situation. Bullying is a very serious topic and it's also something you definitely don't want happening to your child because people handle things differently than others. It can also be the Cause of Suicide and Depression. In Wake County a mother told ABC11 about her son’s attempt to take his own life because of how he was being bullied. <http://abc11.com/archive/9419684/> In the Article it states that the 11-year-old was pushed by the bullies to do it. In March 2000, Christopher Joyner, a student at Zebulon Middle School hung himself in the school gym. The District isn’t talking about these incidents. In 2009, State Lawmakers passed a law requiring school districts to have policies against bullying and Wake County’s policy is clear. <http://abc11.com/archive/9419684/> The Wake County Policy 1 states: “It is the priority of the Wake County Board of Education to provide every student and employee in the school system with a safe and orderly learning and working environment. Olweus Bullying Prevention Program stated with their statistics the outcomes they made were: Fifty percent or more reductions in student reports of being bullied and bullying others. Peer and teacher ratings of bullying problems have yielded similar results. Significant reductions in student reports of general antisocial behavior such as school bullying, vandalism, school violence, fighting, theft, and truancy. Significant improvements in the classroom social climate as reflected in students' reports of improved order and discipline, more positive social relationships, and more positive attitudes toward schoolwork and school. Greater support for students who are bullied, and stronger, more effective interventions for students who bully. <http://www.violencepreventionworks.org/public/olweus_bullying_prevention_program.page> But, as we all know their will always be one person who will be a bully and spread the virus again. Now going onto Cyberbullying; Cyberbullying is a unwanted, aggressive, hostile behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance, using electronic technology (cell phones, computers, social networks sites, etc.) to sent/post mean, humiliating threatening and embarrassing messages. <https://prezi.com/8-8p4qjlw51e/cyberbullying/> The problem is youth are getting publicly humiliated and tormented online, It's illegal in WCPSS to do this. A victim of Cyberbullying; Kelsey Roberts told ABCnews: “They were laughing about it. I started crying my eyes out. I didn’t want to go to school, I just wanted to quit. I don’t know… It broke my heart” <https://prezi.com/lgspiynodpt7/the-issue-of-cyber-bullying-in-wake-county/> Some of the reasons for Cyberbullying are:
Our goal is to have some sort of presentation that will target bullying and how it affects people in schools and communities. We also want to decrease the amount of reported bullying by 10%. To do that in a timely and realistic manner what we can do is have a series of skits that shows the effects of bullying on students and other people like parents and teachers. In order to have the skits we will need to do multiple things. The skits will be about how much bullying affects the students as well as the people around them. To make the skits happen we will need to reserve the auditorium as well actors who are willing to participate in the skits. We will need a bully, the person being bullied, bystanders(students), teachers, etc. We will also need a meaningful script that can hopefully have an impact on the school. So everyone can know about this, we have to put the word out and to do that we will request a section in the school news to announce it. It will be very easy to attend this presentation because it will be during school hours preferably during homeroom and before lunch. These are the basic details of our action plan. We want anyone who can participate in this project to do it whether you’re helping with the skits or advertising it around the school. It’s important to participate because when you do, you’re going to feel like you’ve made an impact on the school and that’s the best part! Our goal again is not to completely end bullying but to have an impact in our school to hopefully be nicer to people and also decrease the bullying by 10%. We hope that our goal is achieved and that our school can feel impacted on the importance of bullying. BIBLIOGRAPHY:

I would define personality as the person that you are when you are happy. I would describe my personality as shy around new people and crazy around my good friends. My friends would describe as the same thing and that I'm usually happy all the time but sometimes I'll have those day where I don't want to cooperate with anyone. When I was little I was very shy and some people would actually think that I was rude. Now I'm willing to meet new people and hopefully become friends. My mom thinks I'm annoyingly crazy and my dad thinks I'm shy. This is my personality.
On March 8, 2017 a rally is being held in Durham for International Women's Day. People in the rally are celebrating the many of achievements of women as well as focusing mainly on the issue of equal pay and reproductive rights of women. The theme of the rally is "It’s Time for a Change!" and more than half of the women working in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district are choosing to cancel classes. This is showing how important women are to our economy and how we should be treating them equally because without we might not have all the teachers we have now, etc. I think that this is a really cool thing to do especially because for decades women have been treated unequally when it comes to the jobs and pay of women as well as other things. How we can be active in this movement is to attend things similar to this in your area and to really appreciate the women who help us in our day to day lives. I'm really going to be thankful for the women who help me everyday like my teachers, my mom, and everyone else (even those who aren't women because everyone deserves appreciation) because without women working the world would be very different.
In the beginning of March an altercation occurred due to racial remarks including a white student and a black student. According to a friend of the black student, before the altercation the white student was constantly throwing racial slurs at the black student starting two months ago when they had a class together. The black student said that he acted out after being threatened with violence to him and his family. Once the altercation broke out a female teacher intervened and according the the friend of the black student, the teacher kept provoking him by telling him that it was just words and he had no right to defend himself or his heritage. She also told him that he was a punk if he hit a girl. The black student was suspended for more than 10 days while the white student had no punishment at all. In my opinion I think that the white student had no right to be telling racial remarks to the black student and if this was the other way around I would have said the same thing.I would call the actions of the black student "defense" of himself and his heritage. And for the teacher, she had no right to tell him that he couldn't defend himself. Everyone has the right to defend themselves. If you're offended by something, defend yourself. She also had no right to call him a punk because he never said or did anything that would make him a "punk". What we can do to stop this is to just be nice to everyone and don't say anything that you think is going to offend someone. At the end of the day one small compliment can make a person's day so just be nice to everyone. It's not a game of who can be the meanest so there is no reason to be mean to people. This was my opinion on what happened at Wake Forest High School.
